Jidai O-Tachi:

The Jidai Koshirae Odachi (Greatsword) was inspired by the field swords of the sengoku-jidai (warring states period). The blade and koshirae are a composite of several old swords, as well as swords from our favorite chambara films. The blade shape is not merely an extra long katana, but also has larger thickness and width and requires specially designed fittings.

The blade is hand forged from a single AISI 1070 steel billet. The hamon is authentically achieved by a process of clay-backing and tempering, producing a martensite edge and pearlite body. The edge and polish are finished by hand with natural and synthetic polishing stones for non-decorative practioner's finish. The fittings are of quality lost wax castings in burnished yellow brass and blackened brass. The handle is fit with extra long rayskin panels wrapped with silk cord. The sheath is hand carved softwood fit with brass fittings in the handachi style, then lacquered in multiple layers to create an orange-peel finish for a superior grip.

At the present time it is one of a few true odachi replica available, part of a limited initial run consisting of only ten pieces. Antique odachi are impossibly difficult to find and very expensive, making the Jidai Odachi a unique opportunity to own a real Japanese-style greatsword. Also available in Satsuma-style koshirae.

2009 Year Update: Higher production quantities have allowed us to now offer odachi at a new lower price!

Includes: Imported Japanese Shigeuchi Sageo.

Sageo Colors: Black with White Spots, Black with Gold Spots, Gold with Black Spots, Solid Black. Subject to Availability.

Kiyomaro:

The Kiyomaro is patterned on the style of swordsmith Minamoto no Kiyomaro (1781-1876), feauturing a 3" o-kissaki, long nagasa, and robust haba (width) with relatively small kasane (thickness). Additional features include a bo-hi (wide groove) and a parallel so-hi (small groove), with a medium sori (curvature). The blade is forged by hand from 1070 high carbon steel and clay tempered to produced a traditional hamon. This differential heat treatment gives it a harder edge and softer spine, making it able to retain its edge through many uses. The blade's polish is finished leaving a traditional edge shape and revealing the temper pattern without hard etching. The mounting uses traditional materials including genuine rayskin, silk or cotton cord, and with fittings made of gold, silver, nickel, copper, brass, and steel.
